Minimum Aviation System Performance Standards (MASPS) for Remote Tower Optical Systems; ED-240B is the current edition.
EUROCAE ED-240A is an edition of the ED-240 family, the Minimum Aviation System Performance Standards (MASPS) for Remote Tower Optical Systems produced by Working Group 100. The family is MASPS in every edition, never MOPS; any 'ED-240 MOPS' citation is an error, most likely confusion with RTCA DO-240, an unrelated standard for ATN avionics. The lineage: ED-240 published September 7, 2016; ED-240A on October 30, 2018, adding visual tracking and PTZ object following performance; ED-240A Change 1 on September 29, 2021; ED-240B, the current in-force edition, on July 31, 2023, integrating surveillance sensors (PSR, SSR, SMR, WAM/MLAT, ADS-B) with the optical system; and ED-240C in draft, targeting December 31, 2028, planned to cover further sensor augmentation, AI use, and cybersecurity. Where CANSO guidance is about how to plan and run a programme, the ED-240 series is about what the optical chain itself must do, end to end from sensor to display. It is a core reference for any vendor or ANSP seeking to certify a remote tower deployment.
